Building character for leaders





We expect our leaders to be role models, to show us where to go and how to do it. But, in fact, we’re all leaders. Leaders of our own life. We can influence how we want to live life and how to make our life more meaningful. On average we have 4.000 weeks to do it.

 

Our character is not static. We can build it and it evolves over time.

 

There are five building blocks of character to look at. Hereunder we share them, including actions we can take.

 

  1. Your intellectual thinking. How quickly do you understand things? Which part was a gift from mother nature, and to what extent did you develop your gift? You can influence only the second. To invest in the quality of your thinking: read a lot. Read non-fiction biographies, dive deeper into history to understand the past. Read about the future like Yuval Noah Harari’s “21 Lessons for the 21st Century”. Avoid too much instant news messaging and invest more time in quality background articles from, for instance, The Economist or Harvard Business Review.
  2. You only get what you give in life. And still, you will not always get back what you invest. Make peace with that. If you have more to give, let that be your gift to the world. Treat others like you want to be treated. Appreciate what you have and create moments to be thankful in the daily whirlwind of life and business.
  3. Transparency and openness. Share your mistakes. We all have made our share of mistakes. And that’s ok. When we are more open to others about our flaws, it becomes so much easier for others to open too. This will open the door to deeper relationships with people around us. At home and at work. If you need to apologize to people, do it! It’s sometimes the only way to make peace and move forward. Often, we don’t say sorry enough and just let things simmer on for too long!
  4. Nudge and follow yourself up. We’re all creatures of habit. And that’s good news. Because it gives us a tool: we can really change if we change our habits. How? By automating new habits. Just look at all the Fitbits and Apple watches out there. It’s exactly this daily nudging that makes people move more. The same is true for our behavior.
  5. There is a difference between happiness and meaning and it’s easily confused. Happiness is the short-term satisfaction we get from something like a fine dining meal or skiing downhill. Nothing wrong with happiness. But meaning is the deeper satisfaction that comes from knowing that we are contributing. Most of us don’t find it difficult to know what gives us happiness. But many struggle to find deeper meaning. Invest in yourself to unlock what gives you meaning. Why do you get up in the morning? Look for ways to integrate more meaning into your life. An investment in yourself is the best investment you can make. Nobody can take it away from you.
